Governor Fubara Orders Relocation of Rivers State House of Assembly to Government House

May 11, 2024

Governor Siminalayi Fubara has issued an executive order mandating the immediate relocation of the Rivers State House of Assembly to the Government House in Port Harcourt. The directive, contained in the official Gazette, Executive Order of the Rivers State Government 001-2023, stipulates that lawmakers will convene at the Auditorium, Admin Block of the Government House.

The decision, according to Governor Fubara, stems from safety concerns surrounding the current House of Assembly complex. He cited the recent fire incident in October 2023, which damaged the assembly chambers, as evidence of the unsafe conditions posing a threat to the lives of staff and lawmakers.

Meanwhile, a Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has granted an interim injunction restraining the pro-Wike speaker of the state House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and 24 other members from assuming legislative duties. The court’s ruling follows an exparte order filed against the pro-Wike lawmakers by pro-Siminialayi Fubara speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo and three others.

In the governor’s gazette, it is stated: “The Hallowed Chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly in its present state is unsafe and constitutes a threat to the lives of the staff and the Honourable members of Rivers State House of Assembly and Thus not conducive for the business and proceeding of the Rivers State House of Assembly.”

Governor Fubara’s executive order emphasizes the necessity for urgent repairs, renovation, and reconstruction of the damaged assembly chambers, ensuring that legislative activities are not hindered during this period. Consequently, all proceedings and business of the Rivers State House of Assembly will temporarily take place at the designated venue within the Government House premises until the restoration work is completed.

The governor’s decisive action underscores his commitment to safeguarding the welfare and security of all stakeholders while upholding the uninterrupted functioning of the state’s legislative processes.
