Protesters Block Major Roads in Jos, Call on President Tinubu to Address the Nation
Protesters have blocked major roads in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, urging President Bola Tinubu to address the nation regarding the ongoing hardships.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports a significant increase in the number of protesters for the #EndBadGovernance protest, compared to Thursday, the first day of the protest.
Protesters blocked the Old Airport Roundabout, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes within the city.
Former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Solomon Dalung, called on President Tinubu to address the nation and alleviate the people’s suffering.
“I thought the president would have saved Nigeria from the stress that the people are going through and the demonstration. But perhaps due to poor advice, he believed the demonstration would not be significant. However, it has seen a 70 percent success rate.
“Nigerians who came out yesterday and today indicate that the president should listen to them. They are saying, ‘Restore the oil subsidy because its removal is causing us suffering; bring it back.’
“Nigerians are also saying that the increased electricity tariff is making us poorer. They want to go to the farm and conduct their businesses, but there is no security. Provide security.
“Are these demands too big for the government of Nigeria? I don’t think so,” Dalung said.
The convener of the protest in Jos, Prophet Isah Elbuba, stated that the protest was proceeding peacefully, with a festival-like atmosphere as people shared their pain.
Elbuba urged the President to respond promptly and reverse the fuel price increase while reinstating the subsidy.
According to Elbuba, the government needs to take proactive measures to end hunger in the country.
Mr. Sam Odeh, Program Manager of the International Organization for Peace and Social Justice (PSJ), noted that despite their hungry state, the youths remained peaceful, dancing and presenting their demands to the government.
Odeh emphasized the urgent need for the government to address the issues that led to the protest. (NAN)
