Akpakomiza: A Joke Taken Too Far

Aug 21, 2024

As Edo State gears up for the 2024 Gubernatorial elections on September 21, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has taken a controversial step by nominating Senator Monday Okpebholo, known as Akpakomiza, as their candidate. This decision, confirmed at the party’s rally on August 13, 2024, reflects a bewildering departure from sound political judgment, veering into what can only be described as a descent into political farce.

The core issue with Akpakomiza’s candidacy is not merely his struggle with the English language—an essential tool for governance in Nigeria’s diverse linguistic landscape—but also his complete lack of a coherent vision for Edo State. In over a year as a Senator, his presence in the Nigerian Senate has been marked by silence, an indication that he is overwhelmed by the demands of legislative duties, let alone the responsibilities of a Governor.

The prospect of Akpakomiza representing Edo State on national platforms, such as the Nigerian Governors Forum, is alarming. Imagine him sitting alongside accomplished leaders like Dr. Alex Otti, Prof. Charles Soludo, and Alhaji Dauda Lawal—figures with proven expertise in finance, economics, and governance. In such settings, Akpakomiza would be out of his depth, unable to articulate Edo State’s needs and defend its interests. This would leave Edo voiceless in crucial national discussions.

This situation highlights a fundamental principle that seems lost in the current political landscape: leadership should be entrusted to the best and brightest among us. Edo State, with its rich cultural heritage and history of intellectual achievement, deserves a leader who can elevate its status, not diminish it.

Moreover, Akpakomiza’s conspicuous absence from media platforms and his lack of engagement with the public raise serious concerns about his ability to govern effectively. His recent performance at the APC rally, where he struggled to deliver a coherent speech, only reinforces the view that he is unsuited for high office.

Even within the APC, there is a quiet acknowledgment that “Akpakomiza nor be am”—he is not up to the task. Yet, some within the party see his candidacy as an opportunity for personal gain, capitalizing on the chaos that would likely follow his election. This cynical approach to governance, prioritizing self-interest over the state’s welfare, is deeply troubling.

The APC’s decision to field such a candidate is not just a mistake; it is an insult to the intelligence and aspirations of Edo State’s citizens. Edo deserves a leader who can represent its interests with competence and integrity, not someone who diminishes its standing on the national stage.

As the election approaches, the people of Edo State face a critical choice. Will they allow this farcical candidacy to run its course, or will they demand a leader who embodies the excellence for which Edo is known? The future of the state hangs in the balance, and it is up to the voters to reject this ill-conceived political gambit and choose a leader worthy of their trust.
